New Harry Potter movie earns $60 mln on U.S. opening day
NEW YORK, July 20 / 2K9 (RIA Novosti) – The sixth Harry Potter movie has grossed $58.4 million from U.S. theaters on the first opening day, Variety said on Thursday.
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” outstripped the previous movie in the series, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” which according to Warner Bros earned $44 million on its opening day two years ago and received some $140 million for its first five days, the newspaper said.
The new movie in the Harry Potter film series, based on British author J. K. Rowling’s sixth book, had been scheduled for the release in November 2008, but was finally released only on Wednesday.
In Russia, the movie was released on Thursday, and will be shown in more than 900 Russian cinemas.
The Russian economic crimes department has carried out a raid on suspected pirate facilities as a preventive measure to stop bootleg copies of the movie from being sold in Russia.
A huge number of printed covers for pirated movies, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, were seized in Moscow on Thursday.
