International Museum Day events around the globe – Top events

During the week of May 18, museums and art institutions in more than 120 countries around the globe will be hosting various events in celebration of both Nuit des Musées (Night of Museums) and International Museum Day (IMD).
The events aim to increase public awareness of museums within society and to encourage community members to share a special moment of discovery and learning.
Julien Anfruns, Director General at the International Council of Museums (ICOM) told Relaxnews that events in Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Lithuania and Europe are among his top five picks for this year’s International Museum Day and Night of Museums.
Brazil will celebrate its 10th National Museum Week with a unique program that highlights technology, ecology and art within museums while Lithuania will marking the 200-year anniversary of the opening of its first public museum by declaring 2012 the Year of Museums.
Burkina Faso will host a museologists’ ball and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Museum of Ouagadougou, China will look back to its past with traditional folk art exhibitions and into the future with the exhibition Digital Museums, and museums in Europe will stay open late into the night with fun-filled exhibitions to celebrate Night of Museums.
Anfruns explained that International Museum Day is “a lively day with a lot of activities to enjoy, contrasting with a certain vision of museums, considered at times as austere and too complicated to understand. We therefore hope that visitors will view museums as easily accessible living spaces.”
The theme for this year’s IMD is “Museums in a Changing World: New Challenges, New Inspirations,” said Julien Anfruns. “The IMD theme is a base from which to explore responses to change, an opportunity for museums of all kinds to showcase their best achievements and latest innovations.”
